The biggest single factor, and the one most likely to catch you out.

• Cold: Blood vessels constrict and fingers shrink. Measuring with cold hands is the most common cause of a ring arriving too small.
• Heat: Vessels dilate and fingers swell. A ring that fits in January can feel tight on a hot day in July.

Always measure with hands at normal body temperature — warm them up first if you've been outside.

Time of Day

Fingers are usually slightly swollen in the morning from overnight fluid retention, settle through the day, and are at their largest again by evening after activity.

Late afternoon is the sweet spot — close to your true average.

Hydration and Diet

Arthritis and joint inflammation can change both finger size and knuckle size, sometimes requiring a larger ring to clear the knuckle even though the finger itself is unchanged.

• Measure three times on different days, at different times, and take the most common result.

• Err very slightly large rather than small — a ring you can't get on is useless, one that's marginally loose is still wearable.
• It should resist at the knuckle. If it slides on with no effort, it'll slide off just as easily.
• Account for band width. Wider bands feel tighter in the same size.

• Ring sizer inserts. Small adhesive or clip-in bands that reduce the internal diameter slightly. Cheap, removable, and they let one ring work across seasons.
• Wear it on a chain. A ring worn on a chain sidesteps sizing entirely — increasingly common, and it works well with a pendant.

Gold and silver can be cut and resized by a jeweller. Stainless steel and titanium generally can't — the hardness that makes them so durable also makes them impractical to alter.

That's not a drawback so much as a reason to measure properly once, rather than assuming you can fix it later.
