If you're starting out, a plain chain is the safer buy. A 2mm or 3mm rope or Cuban sits under a collar, works with everything, and doesn't ask anything of the outfit. A pendant is a stronger choice and usually a more personal one — the compass, cross, St Christopher and St Michael pieces all carry meaning, and tend to be bought for a reason rather than on impulse.

Length is the thing most men get wrong. 20 inches sits at the collarbone and is right for most people. 22 inches drops just below it and suits a pendant better, since it gives the piece room to hang clear of the collar. 24 inches reads as deliberate, and works best layered with a shorter chain.
