Silver is the quieter of the two finishes and the easier one to wear daily. It disappears under a collar in a way gold doesn't, which makes it the better first chain if you're not used to wearing one.

Steel rather than sterling, which matters more here than anywhere else: a chain sits against the neck all day collecting sweat. Sterling would dull and need polishing. This won't, and it won't mark a shirt collar.
