For most men the right pearl necklace is 8mm, in white, worn at a length that sits just below the collarbone. Drop to 6mm if you want it to read like a chain; go to 10mm if you want it to be the first thing people notice. White is the default and the one that behaves. It's the version that reads as classic rather than costume, it goes with every metal, and it's the easiest to wear with a shirt.

Beyond white, there are three directions worth knowing:

Akoya and South Sea pearls are cultured in live molluscs. They're the traditional fine-jewellery pearl, they carry the highest prices, and each one is genuinely unique — which also means a strand takes careful matching to look even.

Freshwater pearls are also cultured, more affordable, and more variable in shape. A freshwater strand often has visible differences in size and roundness from bead to bead.

Shell pearls — what we use — are cut and polished from mollusc shell. The practical consequences are even colour, consistent sizing across a whole strand, a lustre that doesn't dull, and considerably more durability than a cultured pearl. For a piece worn against a shirt collar most days, that durability is the point: shell pearl shrugs off the daily contact that would gradually wear a softer cultured pearl.

Yes — with one habit. Put it on last, after aftershave, sunscreen and grooming products, and take it off first. Those products are what dull a pearl surface over time, not wear itself.
